Free the Child – Inspire to Aspire

Free The Child

Free the Child is a charity dedicated to the support of underprivileged children

As part of TheKnowList’s ongoing commitment to its corporate social responsibility (CSR) programme, it provided financial and practical support to the Free the Child fund raising event in London on 25 June 2011.

Free the Child is a charity dedicated to the support of underprivileged children in Sierra Leone, Nigeria and the UK. The charity has set up orphanages in both Nigeria and Sierra Leone and provides extra-curricula activities to children in the UK, particularly those that are at the risk of being drawn to gang culture.

Gladys Williams, Free the Child’s secretary and daughter of the founder Elizabeth Williams said: “We were looking for motivational speakers and young entrepreneurs to inspire young people to make a success of their lives. Daniel Brown at TheKnowList has clearly made something of himself and we wanted him to speak at the event, but without TheKnowList sponsoring the whole day, it would never have happened.

Free the Child launches Inspire to be Creative competition

Free the Child, the charity dedicated to supporting underprivileged children in Sierra Leone, Nigeria and the UK, has launched the Inspire to be Creative competition. The charity, which is sponsored and supported by TheKnowList, is asking young people to enter their own art or creative work into a competition that will be voted on by TheKnowList members. The winner will be announced later this year and will be invited to attend TheKnowList Awards event in January.

Gladys Williams, Free the Child’s secretary and daughter of the founder Elizabeth Williams said: ‘At our Aspire to Inspire event on 25 June, we held an open mic session and we realised that there was an incredible amount of talent amongst the young people that attended. We felt there was a chance to help them elevate their talent through the Inspire to be Creative programme.’

Competitors have been asked to submit a piece of art, music or video to showcase their talent and a shortlist will be posted on TheKnowList website in October. TheKnowList members will then be asked to vote for a winner, who will receive up to £750 to further develop their talent.

Daniel Brown, CEO of TheKnowList, said: ‘We have really enjoyed making a small contribution to the success of the Free the Child programme. It is clearly an inspiration to young people and we at TheKnowList feel inspired by what it is achieving. We expect the Inspire to be Creative competition to be yet another motivational triumph.’

Over the summer holidays, Free the Child is holding weekly youth club events at Bounds Green School in North London. The charity is also organising a daytrip to Thorpe Park, the theme park in Surrey, on 6 August.
