ANDY SALMON CMG OBE

ANDY SALMON CMG OBE

Without the right culture it’s difficult to execute strategy.  So if you don’t have one, then you need a plan to build one.  Andy will share with you his experience of being part of a high performance culture based on the Royal Marines Commandos. He then discusses what happens when that culture hits reality and how it morphs into something better.  Finally, as a senior leader from that environment, what happens when you have to deliver in a complex and hard environment?   Reflecting and learning from conflict, Andy will provide insights into the critical elements of success for leaders and teams who want to create better futures

Andy Salmon works on high performance culture and senior leadership in challenging environments. He spent over 35 years in the Royal Marines and has just retired as a Major General. His commando service included several tours of Northern Ireland, the Falklands War (1982), Northern Iraq (1991), Angola (1992), Sierra Leone (twice in 2000), Baghdad (2003) and latterly as Commander Coalition Forces in Basra, South East Iraq (2008/9). He was Commander UK Amphibious Forces and Commandant General Royal Marines, before moving to NATO, where he was responsible for generating and preparing NATO forces for operations worldwide, including Libya. He built NATO’s new Comprehensive Crisis Operations Management Centre.

He also worked with the International Criminal Tribunal for Former Yugoslavia and on responses post-9/11. He created the new front-line HQ for the Royal Navy in 2004-6 and was Commandant of the Commando Training Centre, introducing a comprehensive coaching system into the Royal Marines, 2006/7.

He was a special advisor to the Human Security Study Group set up by Javier Solana in 2004, and sits on the practitioners’ advisory board of The Journal of Global Policy. He is a member of Mary Kaldor’s advisory board for ‘The Security Gap’, is a Senior Visiting Fellow at the London School of Economics, and teaches at the Human Security and Civil Society Research Unit. He is the President and Founder of the C Gp charity, which inspires business to support Royal Marines in need, a founder member of The Leaders Club and a Fellow at the RSA. “What a great event, thanks very much for the way you structure these things. I’ve made commitments to meet some of the suppliers back at my office and I think it’s great with the soft-sell approach but also the whole environment leads to a discussion rather than the usual ‘what’s your budget, where’s the PO”.

Mark Sedgwick, Head of IT, GL Hearn

Chris Crowe, TheKnowList Editor, provides a brief review of the speakers.

"Another great event and the TheKnowList Forum just goes from strength to strength. It is a unique and very special event for us. Unlike many events we attend where the content is dry, predictable and often the audience passive, this is the Polar opposite..mixing great speakers and fresh, thought provoking content....".
